Sara Hooker

Sara Hooker leads Cohere for AI, Cohere’s research lab that solves complex machine learning problems and supports fundamental research that explores the unknown. Prior to Cohere, Sara led impactful research on Google Brain. Her work has focused on model efficiency training techniques and optimizing for models that fulfill multiple desired criteria — interpretable, efficient, fair, and robust. At Cohere, Sara leads a team of researchers and engineers working on making large language models more efficient, safe, and grounded. Sara completed her PhD in computer science at Mila AI Institute, supervised by Hugo Larochelle and Aaron Courville. She is a co-founder of the Trustworthy ML Initiative, serves on Kaggle’s ML Advisory Board and the World Economic Forum Council on the Future of Artificial Intelligence, and is a member of the MLC research group. Sara was named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in AI in 2024.
